DealzNear is an app that tells travellers about offers from partner stores near them (starting in Thiruvananthapuram), and a dashboard where those stores publish offers. It is run by Faberlume Labs. This page explains what information we use, why, and what we keep.
For travellers using the app
We don't ask for your name, phone number or email. You don't need an account.
- Your location. The app uses your phone's location to find offers near you and, if you turn alerts on, to notify you when you are near a partner store. To do this it sends your current position to our server with each search. We use it to answer that search and do not save it in our database. Our hosting provider may keep standard web request logs for a short time.
- Redeeming at a shop. When you tap "Redeem here" and scan a shop's counter QR code, the app sends your position once so we can check you are at that shop. We check it and do not save it; we record only that your code was used, and when.
- Location when the app is closed. Only if you choose the Nearby or Wider alert mode and allow
location "all the time", the app collects location data to alert you about deals at partner shops
near you, even when the app is closed or not in use. The app explains this and asks before Android's
permission screen. It does this in one of two ways:
- Checking every 15 minutes: the phone sends its position to our server about every 15 minutes to ask for deals nearby.
- Geofencing: about once a day, and after you move about 5 km, the phone sends its position once to download the partner stores around you. Android then tells the app when you reach one of them, and only then does the app send your position to check the deal. This sends your location far less often.
- A random device ID. When you get a code, redeem at a shop or rate a visit, the app sends a random ID created when you installed the app. We store it with your personal code so the same phone always gets the same code, each code works only once, and only the phone that used a code can rate that visit. It is not linked to your name, number or phone details.
- Ratings. After your code is used, the app may remind you once to rate the visit. If you do, we store whether you got the deal, your stars and any quick tags you picked, linked to that code. The store sees the stars, tags and offer, never who you are. Other travellers see only a store's average once it has enough ratings. If you say the deal wasn't given, our team may follow up with the store using the code, which does not identify you.
- Stamps, rewards and invite codes. When you check in at a partner shop by scanning its counter QR code, or the shop redeems one of your deals, we store a stamp for that shop and day with your random device ID, so the app can show your stamp cards and give you rewards. Checking in sends your position once to confirm you are at the shop; we check it and do not save it. We also store the reward codes we give you and when they are used, the invite code made for your phone, and, if you enter a friend's code, that you joined through them. Shops see how many customers are collecting stamps and how many rewards were used, never who you are.
- Where you installed from. If you install the app from a link (a friend's invite, a poster or one of our agents), Google Play tells the app which link it was. The app sends that link's name, and a friend's invite code if there was one, with your random device ID, once. We use it to apply your friend's code for you and to count which links bring people to the app.
- The camera. "Redeem here" opens Google's QR code scanner on your phone. The app itself does not get access to your camera or photos; it only receives the scanned code.
- Usage counts. When an alert is shown or tapped, or an offer is opened or saved, the app tells our server which offer it was, and for alerts which of the methods above sent it, without your device ID or location. Background checks are counted the same way, per day and method. Stores see only totals, such as "12 people opened this offer".
- On your phone only. Your alert settings, saved offers, codes and the ratings you gave are stored on your phone and are removed when you uninstall the app.
We don't use your location or any other information for advertising, and we don't sell or share it with shops or anyone else. When you redeem, the store sees the code and the time it was used, not who you are. Tapping "Directions" opens Google Maps, which has its own privacy policy. All data travels to our server over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection.
For partner stores
- We keep your store's name, area, map location, category and plan, the offers and photos you publish, your counter QR code, and the codes redeemed at your store, to run the service and show you your results.
- Customers whose code was used at your store can rate the visit. You see every rating on your dashboard; travellers see your average once you have enough ratings.
- Your partner key is stored only in a scrambled (hashed) form, so we cannot read it back. If it is lost we issue a new one and the old one stops working.
- Offer details, photos and your store's name and location are shown publicly to travellers.
For agents who sign up shops
- When you apply on our "Become an agent" page we keep your name, WhatsApp number, area and anything you write about yourself, to review your application and contact you. If you become an agent we also record which shops you signed up and when, and how many installs came from your link, so we can credit and pay you. If we decline your application, we delete it on request. When you add a shop, the page uses your phone's location once to place the shop on the map; we store the shop's location, not yours.
Where the data is kept
Our server is hosted by Render and our database by Neon, both in their Singapore data centres. We do not sell your information or share it with advertisers.
How long we keep it
Codes, redemptions, ratings, stamps, rewards and usage counts are kept while the offer's store is a partner, so the store can see its results. Store records are removed when a store leaves, on request.
Your choices and contact
You can stop location use at any time through the app's alert setting or your phone's settings. Rating a visit is optional. To ask a question, or to ask us to delete information about your store or about a code or rating from your phone, write to us at faberlumelabs@gmail.com. For codes and ratings, tell us the code shown in the app so we can find them.
We will update this page as the app changes and show the date of the latest change above.
